The ability to write fluently can surely give you an edge over others. So, if you have been focusing only your public speaking skills till now, you are doing it completely wrong. Writing skills helps in uplifting your academic life and your career as well. The clearer the communication is, the greater will be the possibility of a high success rate. Be it any field or any profession, writing skill is needed in some part of the journey in life. Furthermore, writing also helps a person to think better. When a person learns how to write, he or she becomes more competent of interpreting what they read and think. Writing goes beyond academic purposes. Businesses require aspirants who can write and communicate effectively. Even the technological era has not reduced the necessity of writing. Be it online chat conversations, faxes, emails or website updates, all these require outstanding writing skills. Writing is a fundamental life skill to learn. Writing, in fact, is a skill that has a lot of advantages, not only to you as a student but to you as a person, too.

Organizing content: The next step is organizing your ideas and relevant information in the proper order. Or in other words, create a draft or rough idea you further want to elaborate on. Making a rough idea helps you in writing a long piece of content by fixing the proper flow and breaking information into paragraphs to make it more meaningful and constructive.

Writing: Now is the actual time of writing. Always use direct language and choose words suitable to the aim of your document. The division of paragraphs, titles or subtitles, and relevant data can make it easier for readers to understand.

Editing and proofreading: Once you have completed writing a report or drafting an email, it’s time to edit, format, and proofread for spelling, grammar, and sentence and paragraph structure. Remember, your readers may take simple grammar, punctuation, or spelling mistakes as signs of carelessness towards your work.

Importance of Writing Skills for Lawyers: 

Writing skill is something that many emerging lawyers fail to understand. Many lawyers work hard to develop excellent public speaking skills. However, writing skills are often overlooked and it’s a grave mistake. Words are lawyer’s most significant tool and success of a lawyer lies in effectively using it. Whether merely writing a response to an inquiry or drafting a legal document, a lawyer has to write in a clear and concise manner. Good legal writing includes three fundamental qualities i.e. clarity, concision, and the ability to engage the reader. Providing clear and concise information means there’s less chance for vagueness, questions, and misunderstanding when you're trying to make yourself understood to judges, other lawyers, and clients. For lawyers, plain language is crucial not only because it promotes clarity for busy, impatient readers, but also because it's the best way to connect with readers' minds and shape their perceptions about a case. “Write to serve individuals rather than writing to impress individuals. Ironically, writing to serve individuals always impresses individuals.” Writing skills helps a lawyer in showcasing a high level of intelligence. When a lawyer has good writing skills, it is easy for people to trust them because they know they are in reliable hands. Good writing skills make a lawyer more influential and develop confidence in them. However, good legal writing skills can’t be learned overnight. “Writing well isn’t a learn it and leave it endeavor; it’s a journey.” You have to read extensively; observe what good writers do; may keep a notebook of words, phrases, techniques; editing; and practice a lot. 

How to improve Writing Skills?

Make it a routine to read your favorite blog or magazine on a daily basis to build your vocabulary. Spend your time in creating a detailed outline before you jump onto writing an article or even a full-fledged answer. Take time out daily and practice writing on topics of your choice. Understand what level of capability your audience is at, and then you can determine what level of language you should be using for your document. Tone down unnecessary complexity, vary the sentence formation and avoid any jargon. Nobody writes flawlessly the first time around. Typos, structural issues and spelling mistakes can so easily happen if you’re writing extensively, so it is necessary that you proofread regularly. Good writing is not an ability that you can learn overnight, but an ability you develop over time. Getting into the habit of checking it regularly will enhance your ability.
